Apley Pool and the Woods

21st January 2023

Distance 3.75 miles. Footpaths and fields, one grass section. No stiles, due to a couple of sections probably not suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

We did this walk on Thursday 21st January. The walk is described in the ‘Wellington and the Wrekin Forest Walks’ leaflet that is available for free from the dispensers on the platforms at Wellington Railway Station, the leaflet can also be downloaded from www.wellingtonwalkersarewelcome.org.uk

Apley Pool and Woods is a nature reserve located near the town of Wellington in Shropshire, England. The reserve covers approximately 100 acres of woodland and includes a small lake known as Apley Pool. The area is known for its diverse wildlife and scenic beauty, and is a popular destination for walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers.

The woodland at Apley Pool and Woods is home to a variety of trees, including oak, ash, and beech, as well as a range of flowering shrubs and plants. The lake is surrounded by a fringe of reeds and marshy vegetation, and is an important habitat for wetland birds, including moorhens, coots, and ducks. Apley pool is a popular fishing pool and during the season many people can be seen fishing at it’s numerous fishing pegs. The pool is home to Carp, Tench, Roach and Rudd and has good access to people with disabilities.

Jon is raising money for two good causes, the Shropshire Down’s Syndrome Support Group and Friends of Wellington Station. So if you can spare a pound or two that would be very gratefully received. Here is his fundraising page.
