In January 2021 the Friends of Wellington Station were successful in a bid for funds from West Midland Trains Community Fund to develop a project at the Station.
Background

The project application was submitted by Telford & Wrekin Council on behalf of the Friends of Wellington Station and at the same time, Marc Petty of LA21 had also submitted a project to WMT called ‘Walking With Giants’ .

The FOWS called the project ‘Wellington Ways’ to combine the sense of arrival at Wellington Station to be the start of more journeys. It promotes the station, and Wellington, as a ‘Gateway for Walking’ – with a strong connection to the Wellington Walkers are Welcome mapped walks which radiate from the town centre, as well as walks into our town for visitors and making the most of this great asset in the heart of Wellington as a key part of the Wellington Welcome.

The project has two main parts;
A ‘Secret Garden’ next to Platform 3 – an oasis of nature at our station with a wildflower area, a path and gabion seating.

Signage, maps, information boards and waymarks for the second part of the project help promote the extensive and varied walking routes throughout the local countryside including the Wrekin Forest. The information boards, dispensers and directional signs created within by the project promote this network and further encourage the use of Wellington Station as a ‘Gateway’ to the Wellington area thus encouraging footfall within the town centre itself.
